Abstract

580,901. Resilient shaft couplings. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and HICKMAN, J. C. Sept. 15, 1944, No. 17659. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to shaft couplings embodying a resilient member 6 sandwiched between and bonded to two plates 1, 2 bolted to flanged members 8, 9 on the two shafts 16, 17, to be coupled, each of the plates having holes 3, 4, of alternately of large and small diameter and the resilient member 6 having cavities 7 of the same diameter as the larger holes. According to the invention the large holes 3 in both plates have slots 11 extending the direction of the pitch circle of the holes and the heads of the bolts are lengthened so that the ends 13 upon a predetermined relative angular movement of the plates 1, 2, will abut the end of the slots to prevent overstraining of the resilient material. The latter, in the neighbourhood of the slots is also cut away to prevent contact of the bolt heads therewith. The bolt end 13 may be the same diameter as the shanks 10 and the edges 11 of the large holes may be depressed as at 15 to prevent the bolt ends engaging the adjacent shaft flange.
