Abstract

An agricultural compost comprises peat, exfoliated vermiculite, a heavy slag and/or an alginate containing material together with a fertilizer or nutrient material. Referred proportions are 1 to 2 parts sphagnum moss peat, 1 to 2 parts exfoliated vermiculite and 1 to 2 parts of the clay or alginate, the latter being in the form of washed and comminuted sea weed or an extract thereof in the form of alginic acid or sodium or calcium alginates. Fertilizers mentioned are potassium nitrate, superphosphate, ammonium sulphate or nitrate and trace elements, boron, manganese, copper, zinc or molybdenum. The final compost preferably contains 100-4,500 parts per million N2, 1000 to 5000 p.p.m. P2O5, 4,000 to 10,000 p.p.m. K2O and 100 to 1,000 p.p.m. MgO.
