Abstract

Dehydrated humus fertilizers containing in soluble form one or more plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphoric acid and/or potash are obtained by adding to an organic base material, such as town or house refuse, a predetermined quantity of one or more inorganic materials capable of providing the required percentage of the one or more plant nutrients and fermenting the mixture within a closed chamber by the action of introduced aerobic thermophile bacteria, until the mass has become dehydrated and sufficiently converted to produce a humus fertilizer containing in close combination the desired excess of the one or more plant nutrients in soluble form, artificial aeration of the mass being carried out during the fermentation and undue acidity being prevented by the addition of inorganic alkaline material. If desired, a preliminary fermentation by means of anaerobic bacteria may also be employed. Suitable inorganic materials are nitro-chalk, nitro-lime, sodium nitrate, sulphate of ammonia, superphosphates, basic slag, kainit, potash, &c. If the inorganic materials are soluble they may be dissolved in a bacteria infested liquid, such liquid being sprayed upon the organic base material, or the dry inorganic materials may be mixed with the organic base material. The fermentation process employed may be that described in Specification 487,837.
