Class 74 (2) A cylinder-and-dial machine has a transfer instrument associated with each needle of both sets so as to enable all the loops on the dial needles to be transferred to the cylinder needles and, after a selection of the' cylinder needles has been made, the loops on the selected cylinder needles to be transferred to associated dial needles. Subsequent to this latter loop transference, the latches of all the dial needles are closed to ensure that only the dial needles with loops knit at the next knitting location and a further selection of the cylinder needles last selected knit at the knitting location. The invention is described in connection with a four feeder machine having eight pattern drums operating selector bits controlling cylinder needle jacks. At a position G, the cylinder needles are raised sufficiently by cams 22 to take loops from the dial needles which are projected to a transfer position by transfer cam 59, the cylinder needles being previously raised to open their latches by cam 90 in preparation for receiving the dial needle loops. After having received the dial needle loops, a selection of the cylinder needles is made by the pattern drum at position D. The dial needles are prepared to receive the loops from the seleected needles by being advanced by cam 71 and retracted by cam 72 so as to cause a latch opener to open all of the latches. The dial needles are then sufficiently projected to receive the loops of the selected cylinder needles by cam 65, the cylinder needles being raised to transfer height by transfer cam 45 acting on the jacks. The latches of all the dial needles are immediately closed by plate 73 as the dial needles are retracted by cam 66. A further selection of the cylinder needles is then made after which the latches of all cylinder needles are opened by a latch opener preparatory to receiving yarn and knitting at the location under the influence of stitch cam 17. The dial needles also are advanced by clearing cam 60 or 61 so that only the dial needles with loops on have their latches opened to receive yarn, and are caused to knit by stitch cam 62. In certain instances, selecting drums may be provided at the locations D only, a selecting cam 91a being provided to co-operate with reversing cam 92 so that the jacks which were previously selected are inoperative and those that were inoperative now become operative.
