Abstract

705,386. Stumps-box substitutes. ROLLSROYCE, Ltd. May 5, 1952 [Feb. 9, 1951], No. 3236/51. Class 122 (5) A rotary shaft sealing device comprises a sleeve 15 in sealing engagement with, axially slidable on and rotatable with the shaft 10 and having a surface resiliently urged into contact with a thrust surface 19b on the shaft housing which also has ribs 19a that co-operate with a surface on the sleeve 15 to form a seal and whose clearance therefrom is controlled by the engagement of the contact surfaces. The sleeve 15 closely surrounds the shaft 10 and is held against rotation thereon by a dowel 17 on the shaft engaging a slot 15d in the sleeve. A radial flange 15a on the sleeve is urged by a spring 13 into contact with the thrust surface 19b and forms a seal with the ribs 19a, the thrust surface and ribs being on a ring 19 fitted in a recess in the shaft housing 18. Lubricant is supplied to the contact surfaces through holes 20 in the flange 15a and slots 19c in the ring 19. In a modification the ring 19 is formed in two parts abutting over part-spherical surfaces.
