Abstract

661,010. Stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 28, 1948 [Oct. 1, 1947], No. 25269/48. Class 122(v) In a sealing device for a rotatable shaft 8, projecting through the wall of a pressure chamber 4, having a sealing member axially slidable on the shaft 8 and forced by the pressure fluid into sealing contact with the wall, the sealing member is of rigid material and is so closely fitted on the shaft 8 that it is taken with the rotating shaft 8 without requiring other means for securing it. In an embodiment applied to a servomotor two member 11, 12 are employed and are acted upon by a spring 17 between them to force them against the walls 2, 3 respectively of the chamber 4. The members 11, 12 have grooves 18, 19 respectively provided in their surfaces facing the walls 2, 3 to reduce the seating and hence frictional force between the members 11, 12 and the walls 2, 3. Fluid is supplied to the chamber 4 by an axial bore 9 in the shaft 8 communicating with a radial bore 10. It is stated that the shaft 8 may reciprocate as well as rotate
