Abstract

616,922. Stuffing-box substitutes. UNITED STATES METALLIC PACKING CO., Ltd., and KERMODE, H. T. Sept. 21, 1946, No. 28319. [Class 122 (v)] In a packing for a rotary shaft, a non-metallic resilient packing ring on an element surrounding the shaft bears against the substantially radial surface of a second element also surrounding the shaft, one of the elements having a limited degree of angular displacement relative to a third element on which it is mounted. The packing has two packing rings 9 mounted on a cup element 5 rotating with the shaft 1, and urged against the surface of a stationary element 10 by compression, springs 4 thrusting against a clamp collar 3. The element 10 has a spherical surface 11 bearing against a similar surface on a fixed backing plate 13. Lubricant may be supplied to the space between the packing rings through a passageway 15.
