Abstract
702,021. Magnetic tests. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 31, 1952 [Jan. 4, 1952], No. 364/52. Class 37 A magnetic testing device comprises a U-shaped magnetic yoke having a hole wherein is located a rotatable permanent magnet for varying the flux through the yoke, and a magnetometer movement located between the poles of the yoke so that when the yoke is placed on the surface of a magnetic material the magnetometer is deflected in accordance with the flux through the test material. The angular position of the magnet 1 (Fig. 1) in the hole 4 of the yoke 5 is adjustable by a handle 3 and is indicated by a pointer 6 moving over a scale 7. The magnetometer 8 comprises a flat permanent magnet 16 (Fig. 2) of Silmanal alloy suspended from a shaft 13 carrying a pointer 11, with a control spring 19, and is mounted on a non-magnetic base plate 9 which slides into grooves 10 in the poles of the yoke 5. In operation for, e.g. measuring the thickness of a magnetic sheet, the device is placed on the sheet and the indications of the pointers 6, 11 noted. One pointer reading is preferably maintained constant, and the variations in the other indicate the variations of thickness. of the test sheets.
