Abstract
1,160,914. Moving coil meters. WESTON INSTRUMENTS Inc. Dec. 8, 1966 [Dec. 29, 1965], No.54911/66. Heading G1Q. The coil 80 of a moving coil meter pivots about an axis 110 outside the coil and the field magnet 42, which is inside the coil, has a polar axis parallel to the pivot axis. The movement is mounted on a base-plate 50 of magnetic material and the magnet is secured, e.g. by adhesive, to the underside of a U-shaped member 18, also of magnetic material, disposed in a plane generally parallel to the base-plate. The magnet Fig. 2 (not shown), is a flat arcuate plate of Alnico or a ceramic and its polar axis is in the direction of its thickness. The coil embraces both the member 18 and the magnet secured to it and the field set up by the coil when energized interacts with the field in the narrow air gap between the magnet 42 and the base-plate 50. The movement has largely conventional pivot bearings and hair spring control which are depicted in detail in Figs. 2 to 4 (not shown). Springs 96, Fig. 1, fitted on prongs 75 of the pointer assembly, function as balancing weights.
