A device for determining the thickness of a non-magnetic coating on a magnetic base' comprises a bar-magnet, 8 (Figs. 1 and 2), extended by a contact-making unit 11 of e.g. spherical or conical shape, which when placed on the test surface causes a change in the magnetic field associated with the magnet 8, thereby altering the angular position of a moving iron rotor 14, to which is attached a pointer 45 moving over a scale 46, the longitudinal axis of the bar-magnet 8 being inclined to the test surface. The plastic instrument case 1 is lined with a steel casing 2, having a window 4 to view the pointer 45. The barmagnet 8 is retained in position by a grubscrew 10, and the moving iron element 14, tapered and curved in a spiral, is suspended near the mid-point of the magnet 8 on a shaft 15, which also carries the pointer shaft 36, and is attached to the free end of a planar hair spring 40, the other end of which is attached to a zero adjusting device operated by altering the tension on the spring 40 by the movement of an attached slotted member 62 effected by rotating an external milled wheel 69. A light metal vane 43 is also fixed to the shaft 15 and provides damping for the rotary movement 14. A normally engaging clamping mechanism is released by pressing a spring- loaded push-button 50 projecting through the front of the case 1, and the movement of the pointer shaft 36 is restricted - by two spring stops 59.
