Abstract

701,249. Fuel-injection pumps. TAVOLA, B. Jan. 31, 1952 [Feb. 5, 1951; March 6, 1951], No. 2591/52. Class 102 (1). A reciprocating pump preferably for fuel injection purposes has a pumping chamber 40 formed by a resilient annular ring 17 which is alternately compressed and expanded by a reciprocating member 14 which carries an inlet valve 22 adapted to abut against a stop 24 so as to be opened during the suction stroke of the pump. The member 14 is actuated by a cam 29 against a return spring 33 or it may alternately be actuated by a crank. Fuel is supplied under pressure by a feed pump or from a pressurised fuel tank through an inlet 31 into a chamber 13 and thence through passages 32 and the inlet valve 22 into the pumping chamber. The inlet valve is loaded by a spring 27 so as to abut against an eccentric portion 24 of a control shaft 25 for varying the point of closing of the inlet valve and thereby the pump delivery. Air is removed by opening a needle valve 35. A number of pumping chambers 40 may be provided in a pump.
