Abstract

701,235. Balancing engines. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Aug. 23, 1951 [Sept. 4, 1950], No. 19892/51. Class 122 (3) A multi-crank crankshaft is balanced by overhung counterweights outside of the end main bearings and counterweights disposed between the two crank webs adjacent to the middle of the crankshaft. In a six-crank crankshaft having a central bearing IV, four counterweights are used, one a<SP>1</SP>, d' at each end of the crankshaft and one b', c' on either side of the bearing IV ; the latter two weights being replaced by a single central one in the case of a crankshaft not centrally supported. The counterweights are arranged to balance the moments due to the rotating plus half the oscillating masses at the cranks and are disposed substantially in a common plane containing the resultant internal moments referred to the intermediate main bearings and the axis of the crankshaft. The counterweights at the ends of the crankshaft may be provided by recesses cut in rings attached to the crankshaft. Vector diagrams of moments occurring at bearings of a crankshaft in accordance with the invention are shown and compared with those for a crankshaft having counterweights at each crank.
