Abstract

697,754. Current collectors. ANTI-ATTRITION METAL CO., Ltd., and LIVINGSTONE, R. Feb. 11, 1952. [April 19, 1951] No. 9202/51. Class 104 (iii). An insert-holder for current collector of vehicles has a spring clamping plate to apply a uniform pressure to the face of the insert, such plate being fastened at one end to the holder so that it cannot twist and at this end is clear of the insert the other end being drawn by a screw or bolt into contact with the insert. A renewable carbon insert 2 is held in position in a holder 1 by a clamping plate 3 attached thereto by screws 4, 5, Fig. 4. The plate 3 is reduced in thickness over the length A so as to be clear of the insert 2 and the remainder of the plate 3 is of sufficient thickness to bear against the insert 2 when the screw 5 is tightened. The holder 1, insert 2 and plate 3 are fastened to a table 6 by a screw 9 and a dovetail 12. The insert pocket in the holder is made with a small radius r at one end, to accommodate the end 2a of the insert 2 of a corresponding radius, and a large radius R at the other end both radii being struck from a common centre O so that the insert can be removed from the holder 1 when swung downwardly about the common centre. The plate 3 may be dowelled, as at 13, Fig. 1, brazed, or soldered along its top edge to the holder 1 to prevent twisting. To ensure uniform lateral pressure on the insert 2 the plate 3 may be provided with a plain semi-circular blind groove at the centre of its top edge combining to form a single circular hole with a similar semi-circular threaded groove in the holder 1, a grub screw being inserted in the hole so that on tightening it applies pressure to the top edge of the plate 3. Alternatively, lateral pressure may be applied to the centre of the plate 3 by a flat or other suitably shaped spring held in a slot formed in the top edge of the plate 3 and engaging a corresponding slot displaced towards the insert 2 in the holder 1, or by a spring and ball or plunger contained in a hole in the plate 3 and engaging an inwardly inclined surface on the holder 1 or by a flat spring fastened in a recess formed on the outside of the plate 3 and engaging a slot in the holder 1.
