Abstract

696,848. Valve amplifying circuits. BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION. March 31, 1952 [April 11, 1951], No. 8471/51. Classes 40 (v) and 40 (vi). Gain control in an amplifier is effected by applying a negative feed-back voltage derived from a high impedance in the anode-cathode path of the final valve to the adjustable tap on a high impedance potentiometer connected between one output terminal of the amplifier and a small resistance in the grid-cathode circuit of an earlier valve. As shown, the potentiometer is connected between the cathode resistor R3 and the output terminal T, the negative feed-back and output voltages being obtained from a resistor R4 in the anode circuit. Upward movement of the slider decreases the proportion of the voltage fed to the output, increases the negative feed-back and reduces the effective value of the anode load of the final valve. Additional stages may be interposed between the two valves. Zero output when the slider is in the uppermost position may be ensured by combining the control with an on-off switch which becomes effective in the uppermost position.
