Abstract

624,525. Valve circuits. YARBOROUGH, E. H. COOKE-. Oct. 31, 1946, No. 32366. [Class 40 (v)] The gain of a thermionic valve amplifier stage is varied by reducing the signal frequency current in part of the anode load resistor whilst maintaining the current in the remainder substantially constant. In this way the change in gain is made substantially independent of the particular valve characteristics and the frequency response of the stage is unaffected by the gain setting. In the Figure, the screen grid of the valve is connected to the junction of the two parts 1, 2 of the anode load resistor, and the suppressor grid may be connected in the " high-gain " position 10 to cathode, when the stage operates in the normal manner. In the " low-gain " position 11 the suppressor is connected at 6 to a source of negative bias of sufficient voltage to cut-off the flow of current to the anode, thereby reducing the gain of the stage. It is shown that the ratio of gain of the stage in these two positions is independent of the mutual-conductance of the valve. The gain of the stage may be remotely controlled by locating the switch 9 at a distance from the valve and the control may be made continuously variable by connecting the suppressorgrid to the movable contact of a potentiometer connected across a bias source.
