Class 6(i) Tines 20 are connected to a tool-carrying frame by a transverse torsion bar or bars 22 to which the upper ends of the. tines are secured, the bar or bars being anchored to the frame at some distance from the blade or blades and being stiff enough to transmit normal forces due to draft without appreciable deflection of the tines, but capable of yielding under frontal shock on the tools, as when meeting an obstruction in the earth, sufficiently to minimize damage to the tools. In the machine shown, two members 11, of which only one is shown in Fig. 1, constitute the sides of the machine frame and each has welded to it a channel 15 which carries, by bolts 16, a bearing 17 for a square-section torsion bar 22. A plate 18 is mounted at each end of the bar and each plate carries bladed tines 20. The centre of the bar 22 passes through square holes in a pair of levers 31 which are welded to a sleeve 30 journalled in a bearing 29, the bearing being suspended from a central frame member 14. A shear pin 35 connects the levers to a link 33 pivoted to the frame. In use, the bar 22 twists when the tines meet an obstruction, thus absorbing the blow, and the pin 35 breaks to allow the tines. to swing freely if the obstruction cannot be cut through. The machine is generally of the construction described in Specification 695,707 and may have its tines each associated with a rotary cutter as in Specification 695,709.
