Abstract

695,366. Knives. DREW, H. Feb. 26, 1951 [March 3, 1950], No. 5462/50. Class 30 The blade of a knife is provided with an interrupted edge consisting of alternating teeth and outwardly directed, curved portions which are bevelled on one face of the blade. As shown, the cutting edge of the blade 10 comprises a number of scallops 11, bevelled at 12, and separated from adjacent scallops by teeth 13, the sides 15 of the teeth having a bevel 16 which merges with the bevel 12. In a modification the scallops may be spaced more widely apart to provide chisel-edged teeth. The scalloped edge is produced by presenting the blade tangentially and at intervals along the length of its edge to the action of the concave periphery of a grinding wheel which grinds the curved, bevelled scallops in the blade for a distance equivalent to the width of the periphery of the wheel, the intervals at which the blade is presented to the wheel deciding the shape of the teeth. The plain face of the grinding wheel is used on the face of the blade remote from the bevel to remove any "fash" from the cutting edge.
