A knife blade has two series of shallow grooves in one or both surfaces, the grooves in each series extending parallel to each other from the cutting edge and the grooves in the two series making different angles with the cutting edge so that a groove in one series intersects grooves in the other series.. As shown, the area 14 of the blade 10 of a bread knife has two series of grooves, indicated by the arrows 16, 17, spaced at twenty to twenty-five to the inch and making an angle of approximately 75 degrees with the curved cutting edge 11. The grooves of the two series inter. sect to provide strengthening diamond formations 18. Each series of grooves is formed by a rotating grinding wheel having peripheral round-crested ribs. A shallow longitudinal groove 26 may be formed having the ends of the grooves breaking into it or parallel to a line 15 defining the area 14 and formed by the inner ends of the grooves.
