Abstract

695,316. Quartz-metal seals. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and POWER, E. B. March 17, 1952 [March 21, 1951], No. 6799/51. Class 36. In making a quartz-metal seal of the kind wherein at least one thin strip of metal is supported within a quartz tube which is softened and pinched on to the metal by a pair of opposed jaws, the face of each of the jaws is formed with one or more recesses at or adjacent to that part which lies over the metal strip during the sealing operation. Electrode leads 1, 6 are welded to the ends of thin sealing strips 2, 8 which at their other ends are welded to stout conductors 3, 9, which are supported in the conical head of a jig-block 4, a quartz tube 11 being placed over the assembly. Pinch jaws approach the assembly at right-angles to the plane of strips 2, 3. The face of each block 13 is formed with a part-spherical recess 15 which co-operate to form a curved end to the tube 11, and each face has four longitudinal grooves, 16-19, and two transverse grooves 20, 21. Grooves 17, 18 lie over strips 2, 8, and grooves 20, 21 lie over the welded junctions of the strips. The lower end of tube 11 is softened with oxyhydrogen flames and the jaws firmly closed. Grooves 17, 18, 20 and 21 protect the strips 2, 8, and the welded junctions and grooves 16, 19 control the flow of quartz at the edge of the pinch. Quartz enters these grooves to produce ridges 22-27 in the completed seal (Fig. 2).
