Abstract
808,933. Vitreous to metal seals. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 5, 1957 [Oct. 9, 1956], No. 30789/56. Class 36. To form a pinch seal, of the type in which a metal foil is asymmetrically attached to the end of a metal rod and the rod is supported only by the foil before sealing, one of the pinch-forming jaws 6 and 7 is provided with a projection 12 which applies pressure against a portion of the rod away from the foil to restrain the rod from tilting out of the median plane, due to its asymmetrical attachment, when the jaws are closed on to the pinch. The projection 12 may be wedge-shaped, and is provided on the jaw on that side of the rod to which the foil is attached; a recess 10 may be provided in the opposing jaw to accommodate the thickness of the rod. The glass may be quartz or borosilicate, the rod tungsten and the foil molybdenum and a nickel lead wire may be welded to the other end of the foil.
