693,515. Spinning spindles, drag arrangements. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Dec. 28, 1951 [Jan. 11, 1951], No. 827/51. Class 120(ii) In a high speed spinning spindle of thekind including a rotatable pirn support and a co-axially rotatable flyer, relative roation between the flyer and the pirn support is obtained by the use of a combination of two brakes for braking either the flyer or the pirn support, namely a hysteresis brake and a friction brake, the latter being adapted to become disengaged under the action of centrifugal :force whereby the hysteresis brake alone is - effective at high spindle speeds while the friction brake prov id e s supplementary torque at low speeds. As shown, a spindle shaft 1 is rotatably supported by a ball bearing 2 pivoted on a horizontal axis 3 and has secured thereto a funnel shaped flyer 4. The lower half 6 of the spindle shaft is feathered and a complementary sleeve is arranged to slide up and down the feathered part in driving engagement therewith, said sleeve being rotatably supported by bearings 8 and 9 mounted in a housing 10. On the sleeve 7 is rotatably mounted, by a bearing 16, a member 15 for supporting a pirn. The pirn support member 15 includes a hysteresis disc 21 the periphery of which is embraced at one point by the poles of a permanent magnet 22. A cylindrical flange 23 is provided on the disc 21 and riveted to this flange at diametrically opposite points are two light leaf springs so arranged that the two arms of each spring are curved inwards for frictional engagement with a cylindrical surface 25 provided at the upper end of the housing 10.
