[July 23, A textile twisting machine comprises a normally stationary yarn-package carrier rotatably mounted on a rotatable spindle having an axial yarn passage, therethrough, a rotatably mounted upper flyer including a substantially horizontal disc and brake means comprising a friction disc constrained against rotation with respect to the yarn package carrier and co-operating frictionally with the upper flyer disc to provide a pretension on a yarn being removed through the flyer from a yarn package mounted on the carrier and has the friction disc resting on the upper face of the upper flyer disc and free for movement in the axial direction so that the amount of the pre-tension is dependent upon the weight of the friction disc. As shown the invention is applied to a " two for one " twister consisting of a rotary part comprising whirl 18 and cup-shaped flyer 20 and a stationary part rotatably mounted on the rotary part by bearings 32 but held against rotation therewith by magnets 36, comprising a yarnpackage carrier 30 on which is mounted a spool 40. The spindle of the rotary part has an axial passage therethrough with which communicates a radial passage 24 in the flyer 20 the lower part of which is in the form of a yarn storage groove 22. The upper end of the normally stationary spool 40 is provided with an upper support member 46 which rotatably supports an upper flyer 50 consisting of a horizontal disc 54 which has a guide member 56 of generally heart shape, including curved slanting edges 60, extending downwardly from its peripheral edge. At the upper. end of said heart-shaped guide at opposite edges thereof are provided yarn guiding slots 55 the arrangement being such that the yarn unwinding from the spool 40 leaves at an angle substantially perpendicular to the axis of the spindle. For braking the upper flyer a friction disc 64, adapted to engage shaft 48 and be maintained in a non-rotative position thereby but capable of relative vertical movement with respect thereto, is provided such that it rests on the upper surface of the flyer disc 54 and thus exerts a braking action on the flyer and thereby imparts a pre-tensioning to the yarn.
