[Class 110 (i)] A unitary liquid pump and gas compressor construction comprises a common casing and means for maintaining a liquid seal between the pump and compressor at a pressure not substantially less than the pressure in the discharge of the gas region. In one construction, Fig. 1, centrifugal liquid pump impeller elements 45 and liquid ring gas compressor elements 46 are provided on opposite sides of a rotor disc 42. The compressor discharges through a connection 61 to a separator tank 32, wherein any liquid entrained by the gas is separated and returned by way of a ball float valve 34 to the suction passage 75 of the pump. Dry gas is discharged through a pipe 62. Liquid leaking past sealing surfaces 24, 25 to an annular space 26 passes through a restricted orifice 27 to a chamber 28 which communicates by way of a pipe 31 with the separator tank 32. Similarly, the annular space between sealing surfaces 23, 36 is connected to the chamber 28 by an orifice 37. Instead of being connected to the separator tank 32, the chamber 28 may be connected to the pump suction passage 75 through a relief valve or an orifice. In a modified construction, separate pump and compressor impellers are employed. In a further construction, the pump and compressor impellers are combined as in Fig. 1, but the pump impeller is of the type shown in Fig. 14, wherein liquid enters the impeller at 90 and is discharged at 97.
