Abstract
Prior to silvering, articles are sprayed with cleansing or sensitizing solutions or both, the former comprising trisodium phosphate and surface-active agents soluble both in alkaline and acid solutions, and the latter stannous chloride, hydrochloric acid and surface-active agents. The surface-active agents may be (a) in either case, alkyl sulphonates such as cetyl sodium sulphonate or alkylated naphthalene sulphonates such as isopropyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate; (b) in the cleansing solution, di-isopropyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate or fatty alcohol sulphates such as sodium lauryl sulphate; (c) in the sensitizing solution, alkyl ethers of naphthalene sulphonates such as butoxy naphthalene sodium sulphonate.ALSO:Solid bodies are coated with silver by applying a cleansing or sensitizing fluid or both by means of a spraying device of such form that the fluid is atomized and projected by and with an air jet, and subsequently applying a silver solution and a reducing solution by means of a spraying device of such form that the solutions are simultaneously mixed and sprayed in atomized state in and by an air jet. The cleansing solution may comprise trisodium phosphate and a surface active agent soluble in both alkaline and acid solutions; the sensitizing solution is of stannous chloride containing hydrochloric acid and a wetting agent; the silver solution may be an ammoniacal silver nitrate solution; and the reducing solution an ammoniacal solution of formaldehyde with or without sugar. After each stage, the surface is well rinsed with water using a spray head or spray gun. Silver mirror surfaces may be protected by a further transparent coating which may contain a dye. Wax, vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer and other matrices for the production of electrotype duplicates may be silvered in this way and then electroplated with copper, or first with nickel and then with copper. The production of mirrors on glass and plastics, the decoration of glass, ceramics and plastics and the electroplating of glass, ceramic, plastic and other non-conductive materials are referred to and among plastic and similar materials mentioned are phenolic resins, urea and melamine resins, acrylic plastics, styrene plastics, vinyl plastics, cellulose plastics, waxes and rubbers. Specification 596,732, [Group XVI], is referred to.
