Abstract

Non-metallic surfaces (other than hydrocarbon polymers such as polystyrene or solid polymers of ethylene) are coated with metal, particularly silver, by reducing a metal salt in solution in the presence of an anionic surface active agent such as the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of a sulphonated long chain fatty alcohol, and depositing the metal from the said solution on an activated area of the surface. Preferably the sodium salt of sulphonated lauryl alcohol is used and when silvering is added to an ammoniacal solution of silver nitrate in amount not exceeding 0.2 per cent by weight of the solution, formaldehyde being added for the reduction either before or after immersing the surface in the solution. Activation is achieved by e.g. treating the surface with a solution of stannous chloride in hydrochloric acid, or (when copper is to be deposited) with dilute solutions of the chlorides of the noble metals-gold, platinum &c. In this manner required parts only of a non-metallic surface may be metal-coated, e.g. electrodes of any desired shape or area may be deposited on quartz piezo-electric crystals; also the interior of a narrow bore glass tube may be silvered uniformly. Non-metallic surfaces particularly referred to are glass, mica, quartz, and synthetic resins of the acrylic acid group.
