Class 100(ii) [Also in Group VIII] An embossing machine, in which an operating member presses against a surface and is supported by a counter surface, is provided with mechanism for compensating deflections of the surfaces in the direction of pressure, whilst maintaining a guide or other device substantially in an unchanged position, the mechanism comprising a lever and linkage system including a link connected to the operating member and pivoted to a lever which follows the deflection of the counter surface, and a supporting member for the guide or other device pivoted on the lever. As shown, the mechanism is included in a machine of the type described in Specification 666,614 in which leather is embossed against platen 1 by roller 7 mounted on travelling carriage 6. Link 13 is attached to the roller shaft and is pivoted at 14 to two levers 15 the other ends of which are loosely mounted around the spindles of the carriage wheels 16. Arms 18 are pivoted at intermediate points of the levers 15 and support hydraulic cylinder 9 which moves with the carriage. Differences in the deflections of the guides 2, 5 may be allowed for by varying the position at which the arms 18 are pivoted on the levers 15. The levers may be constituted by pairs of side-byside arms rigidly connected, the longer arms being attached to the link 13 and the shorter arms to the members 18.
