Abstract

689,673. Spring catches; door stops and holders. SAXTON, M. F., and COMEY, C. S. Aug. 16, 1951 [Aug. 17, 1950], No. 19319/51. Classes 44 and 65 (i) A catch of the kind yielding to opening or closing pressure comprises a casing 10, Fig. 3, having an opening 12 at one end and closed by a plate 32 at the other, a hollow piston 14 sliding in the casing and having an opening 16 aligned with the opening 12 and an inturned rim 28 at the other end, a bolt 18 having a disc-like base 20 inside the piston and a latching nose 22 projecting through the openings 12, 16, a spring 24 inside the pistons acting against the base 20 and a weaker spring 30 acting between the end of the piston and the plate 32. In fastening, as shown in Fig. 6, the catch acts as an ordinary latch, the keeper 56 engaging the oblique face 36 of the bolt to force it and the piston back against the weaker spring 30. In opening, the bolt tilts about one edge of the base 20 deforming the spring 24 as shown in Fig. 8. When the bolt reaches a certain angle its provides an axial component of pressure so that the bolt and piston move rearwardly as a unit compressing spring 30. The catch may be mounted in a mortice in a door edge as shown in Figs. 6 and 8 or it may be secured to the face of a door by a band clip. In Figs. 11, 12 the casing 100 is clamped under a strap 110 having securing flanges 108 and forming part of a handle 100 secured at the other end by a flat portion 102. A washer 80 between spring 24 and bolt 18 carries a rod 78 projecting through an opening 76 in the casing end-closing plate 74. An apertured plate 84 pivoted to plate 74 may be swung to and from a catch locking position in which it blocks the ends of the rod by finger pieces 86. In the form of Fig. 14 the catch is mounted under a strap 128 attached to an inside handle 116 bolted through the door by screws 124 and tubular nuts 120 to an outside handle 114. In another arrangement the catch casing is secured between two parts which are riveted together to form a handle. In another form the catch is mounted to project through an opening in the bottom of a channel shaped member, one side wall of which is secured to the door and the other of which serves as a hand grip. An auxiliary sliding bolt may be provided in this form to engage the keeper and secure the door. Door stops and holders: In the form of Fig. 20 the catch is used as a door stop mounted in a flanged sleeve 166 on the floor, the bolt being adapted to co-operate with a keeper 168 attached to the door. A rubber buffer 170 surrounds the casing 100 and sleeve 166.
