Abstract

689,560. Transformers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 28, 1952 [Feb. 3, 1951], No. 2279/52. Class 38 (ii). An electric transformer comprises a casing 1 which includes a cover 4 secured to the side wall 2, the cover 4 being provided with orifices therein, and the transformer windings 3 being mounted within the casing. Removable terminal structures comprising insulating bushings 6 are attached to the cover by means of flanges 8 so that the portion 9 of the bushing projects into the casing through the orifices in the cover, a pocket 10 of insulating material being secured to the cover so as to enclose the portion 9 of the terminal bushing. Gas-tight joints are provided between side wall and cover, between cover and pocket; and between pocket and electrode 12, this electrode being connected to the windings 3 so that connection may be made thereto by way of terminal 5, extending through the bushing 6, and the portion 7 thereof, which together with portion 13 of the electrode 12 forms a plug and socket connection. Thus the terminal bushing may be unshipped without breaking the seal of the transformer casing. In a further embodiment the space between the pocket and the lower portion of the terminal bushing may be arranged to have an oil filling, communication between this space and the interior of the casing being by means of spring-loaded valves which are open only when the bushing is assembled with the cover. The vent for the transformer casing may, in this case, be arranged at the top of the pocket.
