Abstract
687,100. Plate heat-exchangers. A.P.V. CO., Ltd. Jan. 3, 1950 [Jan. 13, 1949], No. 966/49. Class 64 (iii) In a heat-exchanger comprising spaced plates 10a, an undulating flow passage is provided between adjacent plates by relatively large corrugations 11 in the plates, smaller corrugations 17 being superimposed on the corrugations 11, the corrugations 17 of adjacent plates co-operating to constitute along the length of said flow passage, a succession of chambers C connected by restrictions R to produce changes in velocity and direction of the liquid flowing through said passage. The plates 10a may each be formed with a marginal recess 36 (Fig. 5) to receive a sealing gasket (not shown) defining the space between adjacent plates and in this form the ends of each large corrugation 11 are formed with a small corrugation 41 which extends to the recess and which co-operates with a similar corrugation on an adjacent plate to provide a restriction in the flow passage and to reduce the tendency of the liquid to by-pass the corrugated portions of the plates adjacent said recess 36. The pitch p<SP>1</SP> of the small corrugations may be between one third and one eighth of the pitch p of the large corrugations and the depth h<SP>1</SP> of the small corrugations may be between one quarter and one twentieth of the depth h of the large corrugations.
