Gear changing is facilitated by means of a tail coupling with limited lost-motion comprising a screwed sleeve 4 which is splined on a shaft 2 driven from the gearbox and which engages an internally-threaded output sleeve 5, flanges 3, 6 fast with the sleeve 5 having ratchet dogs adapted to engage ratchet dogs formed on the ends of the sleeve 4. Buffer springs 8, 9 are provided, and the sleeve 4 contains grease which acts as an additional buffer.
