Abstract
681,968. Granular resistances. PHILCO CORPORATION. April 6, 1950 [April 13, 1949], No. 8680/50. Class 37. A voltage regulating element comprises a compact column of aligned silicon carbide granules between end electrodes. The granules are of roughly ellipsoidal form, the longitudinal axis of each of the granules being disposed in substantial alignment with the longitudinal axis of the column. Changes in voltage across such a regulator produce non-linearly related changes of current therethrough in the region in which it provides regulation. A column of silicon carbide granules 15 is enclosed in a cylindrical container 16 of glass or other heattransmissive material. One end of the container 16 is closed by a conducting plug 17, while pressure is applied to the other end of the silicon carbide column by a spring 19 acting on a plunger 18. The whole is enclosed in an insulating cylinder 21 having a screwed cap 22 by which the pressure of the spring 19 may be adjusted. The plug 17 and plunger 18 are provided with terminals 23, 24. In order to align the granules the filling of the container 16 is carried out while a strong axial electric field is applied. Alternatively vibration may be applied to the container 16 during filling, with or without the application of an electric field.
