Abstract
681,768. Hydraulic couplings. TWIN DISC CLUTCH CO. Sept. 4, 1950 [Jan. 24, 1950], No. 21780/50. Class 69 (ii). A hydraulic coupling comprises a runner 15 and an impeller 12, having a plurality of constant size liquid discharge ports, forming a liquid circuit, and a pump for supplying liquid to the circuit through a control valve 19, Fig. 2, having a casing 21 with inlet and discharge ports 25, 26 respectively and a piston 28 slidable in the casing and actuated by yieldable means so as to mask and unmask an exhaust port 35. The piston is moved to the right by a rod 37 through a spring 40, thereby closing the exhaust port and establishing pressure in the circuit. The coupling has a pair of impellers 11, 12 coupled to a flywheel 13 and a pair of runners 14, 15 coupled to an outlet shaft 17. Liquid is supplied to the coupling from a sump 42 by a gear pump (not shown) through pipes 45, 47, passages 49, 50, 52, 53, 55 and chamber 56 and is constantly discharged through the ports 57. The position of the ports 57 determines the amount of fill and the size and number of ports determines the rate of fill. A baffle 58 deflects the discharge liquid from the coupling. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the liquid discharges into an annular shield 59 and is collected therefrom by a scoop or scoops 63 and returned to the sump. In another embodiment liquid is supplied to the coupling through a bore in the output shaft and is also used to lubricate the rotating parts.
