Abstract

697,408. Hydraulic couplings. WEYMANN, C. T. May 24, 1951 [May 25, 1950; Nov. 3, 1950], No. 12225/51. Class 69(ii) A hydraulic coupling comprises a pump wheel 5 rotating with a driving shaft 2, a turbine wheel 6 secured to a driven shaft 3, a casing 4 fixed to the pump wheel 5 for rotation therewith and enclosing the turbine 6, a pump 10 driven by the shaft 2 for continuously supplying liquid under pressure into the casing 4, at least one liquid outlet port 7 in the peripheral wall of the casing 4, an overflow duct 7b for conducting liquid from the interior of the casing to the outlet port 7 and determining the highest level of a liquid volume constantly retained in the casing 4, and 'centrifugally operated valves 8 associated with the port 7 for preventing liquid overflowing said level from discharging through the port 7 when the casing 4 rotates above a predetermined speed. The valve 7 is opened at low speed by a spring 9. In modification, Fig. 4, a secondary valve 17 closing only at low speed is provided either upstream or downstream of the valve 8. Bleed valves are provided in the casing 4 towards the axis of the coupling for relieving excess pressure and a second pump driven by the shaft 3 and drawing from the sump 12 formed by the outer casing 1, as does the pump 10, also supplies liquid to the interior of the casing 4. In a further modification the valves 17, 8 are spaced around the periphery in side-by-side relation.
