679,286. Delivering measured quantites of liquids. COURTAULDS, Ltd. (Courtaulds (Canada), Ltd.). June 6, 1951 [June 7, 1950], No. 14200/50. Class 106(v) Apparatus for delivering a measured volume of liquid, in particular sodium hydroxide solution to a churn for use in the production of viscose, comprises a chamber 1 with an overflow weir 7 and an outlet 4, a pneumatically-operated inlet valve 8, a pilot valve 16 operated by a float 26 and a pressure reservoir 18 fitted between the pilot and inlet valves, from which the air exhausts slowly after the closing of the pilot valve and allows the inlet valve to close slowly. The inlet valve is normally held closed by a spring 12 but, in the lowered position of the float and, therefore, of the pilot valve, is opened by compressed air from a control valve 14. As the liquid level in the chamber approaches the semi-circular cut-out in the weir plate 7, the float raises the pilot valve to shut off the air supply and connect the reservoir with a vent pipe 22, the aperture of which may be adjusted by a valve 23. As the reservoir exhausts slowly, the liquid supply is gradually cut off and the turbulence in the tank subsides while the excess is passing over the weir plate into the pipe 6. The control valve 14 is then opened to atmosphere and the outlet valve 5 is operated manually or by automatic time control to discharge the measured quantity. A displacer 28 mounted on a screw 29 is providing for adjusting the volume measurer.
