Abstract

675,280. Feeding webs. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Feb. 17, 1949 [Oct. 14, 1948], No. 4392/49. Class 100 (i). [Also in Groups XVII and XL (b)] In a wrapping machine (see Group XVII) a web of wrapping material is fed over rollers 2, 3 and thence downwardly through a severing device 13, 14 by a pair of rollers 6, 6x carried by an arm 4 pivoted on a driven shaft 5, the roller 6 being driven by a chain 7 from a sprocket 8 on the shaft. The arm 4 is swung upwardly and downwardly by a crank or cam to produce an intermittent feed, the angular velocities of the arm and roller 6 being such that the web is stationary during the upward movement of the arm. The shaft 5, Fig. 6, is driven by a motor through a sprocket wheel 19 which is loosely mounted on the shaft and carries a number of planet gears 20 meshing with an internal gear 21 and a gear 22 fixed to the shaft. The gear 21 is normally held stationary but is rotatable by a worm and wheel 24, 25 under the control of . a photoelectric device (see Group XL (b)) to compensate for slip between the feed roller and web and ensure that division lines on the web are accurately positioned when the severing device is operated.
