Abstract

580,906. Feeding webs. JONES, K. W. Oct. 3, 1944, Nos. 18874/44 and 24095/45. [Class 100 (i)] In a reel-fed printing machine having a suction roller to draw the web through the machine, means are provided for intermittently rotating the suction roller. As shown, the shaft 11, driven by the chain 10, drives the rollers 1, 2 of a rotary printing unit continuously through gearing 13, 15, and a suction roller 5 intermittently through a mutilated gear 12 and the gear wheel 16. The gearing is synchronised so that when the web 4 is being moved by the suction roller 5, a stereo 3 on the roller 1 prints on the web, but when the web is stationary, a part of the roller 1 having no stereo is opposite the web. A platen printing unit 6, 7 prints when the web is stationary and secondary operations, such as cross-perforating or punching may be performed. If the units for these operations are placed behind the suction roller 5, an additional continuously rotating pull-through roller, suction or otherwise, is used, causing such a pressure as to allow the web to slip on it when the suction roller 5 is stationary. The surface speed of this roller may be greater than that of the web when moving. Specifications 517,534, [Group XXIV], 559,388, 567,693, [Group XXIV], and 570,795 are referred to.
