835,359. Seaming non-metallic sheet materials. S.C.A.E. SOC. COSTRUZIONI APPARECCHI ELETTRONICI S.R.L. Feb. 20, 1958, No. 5509/58. Class 42 (1). A machine for welding thermoplastic tubular strip for making bags comprises an intermittently rotated drum 7 receiving material from a continuously rotated drum 4, a reciprocable welding member 44 arranged to contact the material in the drum 7 when the drum is stationary and rollers 8, 9 for taking up the slack material when the drum 7 is stationary and returning it when the drum 7 starts to rotate again. As shown in Fig. 3, the welding member 44 is mounted in slides 26 which are reciprocated vertically by means of contact rollers 27 which contact cams 22. One of the slides 26 is provided with a rack 35 which contacts a gear 37 fast with the drum 7 as the slide is lowered to stop the drum 7 while welding takes place. The drum 7 is driven from the drum 4 by means of a chain 65b which passes over pulleys 67, 68. When the drum 7 is stationary the rotation of drum 4 causes the pulley 68 to be raised. The pulley 68 is mounted on an arm 71 connected by gearing 74 to an arm 76 connected by a link 55 to the arm 54 carrying the rollers 8, 9. As the pulley 68 is raised it causes the pulleys 8, 9 to be moved to take up the slack material, the pulleys 8, 9 being returned to their original position as the pulley 68 is lowered when the drum 7 is allowed to rotate by the raising of the slides 26 when the gear 37 is released by the rack 35. The speed of the drum 4 is controlled by a device 60 incorporating a photo-electric cell which corrects the relative position of the welding with respect to a stamping mark on the material. The material passes from the drum 7 to a cutting device 10.
