Abstract

673,418. Oil gas generation; gas mixtures. UNITED ENGINEERS & CONSTRUCTORS, Inc. March 22, 1950, No. 7129/50. Classes 55 (i) and 55 (ii). An ignited bed of solid fuel is blasted with concentrated oxygen (of a purity of at least 65 p.c. by volume with respect to diluents) and endothermic gas-making fluid such as steam or carbon dioxide, and the product gas is passed through a hydrocarbon pyrolysing zone in which an enriching gas is generated by the reaction of fluid hydrocarbon with additional oxygen and steam &c., the blast through the fuel bed being desirably occasionally replaced by an air blast to establish more uniform vertical distribution of temperature. Conventional carburetted water gas plant may be employed, the enriching gas being generated by partial combustion of the oil in the carburetter and fixed in the superheater, both of which may be empty or provided with checkerbrick, &c. or a single vessel which may be located above the fuel bed may be utilized. The oxygen and steam, or oil and steam may be premixed. Temperatures of the order of 1400-1550‹ F. at the base of the superheater may be employed. To adapt the final mixture to the market either a relatively small proportion of enriching gas of high calorific value or a larger proportion of lower calorific value may be used accordingly as the prices of solid and liquid fuel are respectively low and high and vice versa. In an example, coke is blasted with a 2 : 1 mixture of steam and pure oxygen yielding a gas of 295 B.Th.U. per cubic feet which is enriched with oil gas produced from gas oil supplied at the rate of about 3.5 gals. per 1000 cubic feet of generator gas and with sufficient concentrated oxygen and steam to yield about 370 cubic feet of oil gas of about 1130 B.Th.U., the mixed gas having a calorific value of about 520 B.Th.U.
