Classes 55 (1) and 55 (2) In gasifying finely divided coal, lignite, peat, coke, hydrocarbon oils &c. to produce gases rich in carbon monoxide and hydrogen, a suspension of the fuel in gas containing oxygen and an endothermically reacting medium such as steam or carbon dioxide the temperature of which is below 100‹ C., is injected as a jet into a reaction chamber maintained at ignition temperature, the proportions of the mixture and its rate of flow being such that the heat of the reaction between part of the carbon and oxygen is sufficient to raise the temperature of the components to 1200‹-1600‹ C. and to cover the heat consumption of the endothermic reaction of the remainder of the fuel. Finely divided coal &c. mixed with oxygen and steam is admitted through an injector nozzle 4 into an inlet reaction chamber 1, steam also being introduced through an annular series of inclined nozzles so as to form a helically moving protective layer or envelope. Reaction products entering a second reaction space 6 react with slightly superheated steam or atomized water injected through nozzles 9 to increase the hydrogen content at the expense of the carbon monoxide. Unburnt residue or ash is discharged through an opening 8. Specification 673,161 is referred to.
