A stuffing-box substitute for the screwed actuating- spindle 13 of a valve 18 comprises a packing 10 which extends along the spindle and is provided with an outwardly-directed collar, the packing being supported as regards both its longitudinal and outwardly-flanged portions by a shaped washer 11, and the latter and the packing 10 are gripped between a shoulder on the body of the valve and a cover 12 which is screwed into the body. The packing is bulged at its lower end 20.
