669,684. Motor vehicle steering arrangements. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Dec. 6, 1949 [July 20, 1949], No. 31285/49. Class 79 (v). [Also in Group XXV]. A ball and socket joint comprising a pair of opposed studs rotatable about their respective arcs and tiltable about a common centre in a housing is incorporated in the steering linkage for the front wheels 52 of a motor vehicle. As shown in Fig. 4, one of the studs is connected by the drag link 28 to the pitman arm 56 of the steering gear, the other stud is connected to the steering arm 26 of the left-hand wheel, and a shank 14 projecting from the joint housing is connected to the tie rod 16. In a modification, one of the studs is connected to the steering arm of the righthand wheel, the other stud is connected to the drag link, and the shank 14 is connected to the tie rod. As shown in Fig. 6, one of the studs is connected to an arm of a crank 58 pivoted to the frame 54 of the vehicle near its longitudinal axis, the other arm being connected by the drag link 60 to the pitman arm 56 of the steering gear. The other stud is connected to one half 16a of a split tie rod, and the housing shank is connected to the other half 16. In a further modification, one stud is connected directly to the pitman arm of the steering gear, the other stud to the left half of a split, tie rod, and the housing shank to the right half. In yet another modification, similar to the previous one, a second ball joint is interposed in the tie rod, and one of its studs is connected to an idler arm pivoted to the vehicle frame.
