Abstract
741,898. Pivotal joints. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. June 19, 1953, No. 16998/53. Class 65 (2). [Also in Group XXXI] In a steering linkage for vehicles, a tie-rod 17 is connected to a steering arm 15 by a pivotal joint comprising an attaching block 22, yoke means pivotally attaching the tie-rod to one end of the block for pivoting of the tie-rod in a vertical plane about a horizontal axis, and yoke means attaching the steering arm to the other end of the block for pivoting of the steering arm in a horizontal plane about a vertical axis. As shown, the attaching block is formed with a pair of knuckle ends disposed at right angles to each other. A fitting 23 is clamped to the tie-rod and has a yoke end which embraces one of said knuckles and is connected thereto by a horizontal pivot-pin 24. The steering arm has a yoke end which embraces the other knuckle and is connected thereto by a vertical pivot-pin 30. Each pin screws into one ear of its associated yoke, and is lubricated by a fitting 48. In a modification, the attaching block has yoke ends which are disposed at right angles to each other and which embrace respective knuckles formed on the end of the steering arm and a fitting which is screwed into the tie-rod.
