Abstract

668,902. Change-speed gearing. EATON AXLES, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1950, No. 1956/50. Class 80 (ii). An electromagnetically controlled epicyclic two-speed gear comprises a ring gear 46 secured to the driving shaft 34, a planet carrier 58 secured to the driven shaft 40, and a sun gear 48 which is slidable and rotatable on the shaft 40 and to which is secured an armature disc 74 formed on one side with clutch dogs 76, engageable with projections 68 on a plate 64 secured to the carrier 58, and on the other side with protuberances 78 engageable with a radial part 4 of the housing 20, in which latter is fixed an electromagnetic coil 70. With the coil de-energised, a spring 80 moves the gear 48 and armature 74 to the left to lock the gears solid for direct drive. On energising the coil, the disc 74 is drawn to the right and held stationary in contact with the wall 4, though spaced slightly from the coil, giving a reduced drive. Alternatively, the driving and driven shafts may be interchanged, so that direct or overdrive is obtained.
