Abstract

861,568. Change-speed gear. WARD Ltd., T. W. Jan. 23, 1959 [Jan. 24, 1958], No. 2488/58. Class 80 (2). A two-speed epicyclic gear comprises a driving sun gear formed on an input sleeve 9 and meshing planet pinions 8 in a carrier 7 splined to an output shaft 6, and a ring gear formed in two parts 12, 13 urged apart by a circular spring 14 to engage coned surfaces 12a, 13a with coned mating surfaces on the planet carrier to give direct drive. The ring gear parts 12, 13 are also formed with coned surfaces 12c, 13c engaged by brake rings 15, 16 to give reduced drive; the brake rings are urged inwardly by springs 19 to engage the parts 12, 13 and are moved apart to release parts 12, 13 by balls 27 which co-operate with cam grooves 28 in the brake rings and are mounted in a rock plate 20 rotatable relatively to the brake rings by a handle. Stepped driving and driven pulleys 4, 5 precede the input sleeve 9. In a modification the brake rings are actuated by electromagnets instead of springs and the rock plate is dispensed with.
