Abstract
524,982. Variable-speed gearing. LAGONDA MOTORS, Ltd., and SEWELL, C. W. Jan. 9, 1939, No. 644. [Class 80 (ii)] In a change-speed gearing a gear change is produced by the sliding into engagement of positive clutch elements synchronized by coaxial electromagnetically operated means. A driving shaft 11 carries a gear 12 with dog clutch element 18 and a driven shaft 17 carries a freely mounted gear 16 with clutch element 19. Between the elements 18, 19 is an electromagnetic device comprising coil 25 energized from leads 31. The elements 18, 19 are freely mounted in carriers 21 on members 23 keyed to the shaft 17 and slidingly engaged by a sleeve 26. To directly couple the shafts 11, 17 movement of a gear-levercloses a contact to energize the coil 25. This causes the carrier 21 to revolve in synchronization with the dog element 18, the friction between the parts 21, 26 discouraging sliding movement of the sleeve 26 until synchronization has been attained. Axial movement to engage the parts 18, 26 can then be made: The circuit through the coil 25 preferably is broken before engagement of the parts 18, 26. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the electromagnet encircles the sliding clutch element which is. actuated by an internal push rod.
