Abstract

659,039. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. Oct. 19, 1949, No. 26848. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1948. [Class 8(i)] A suction cleaner nozzle body 4, Fig. 2, has the area of its suction mouth 7 varied by means, e.g. a plate 31 actuated by a pneumatic device, e.g. bellows 26 manually controlled at will by the operator. The bellows 26 is held in the minimum nozzle area position shown against a spring 55 by atmospheric air admitted through a body port 43, a port 42 of a rockable annular valve plate 40 and body ports 37, 36, the exterior of the bellows being subjected to normal suction through the central opening of the valve plate 40. To collapse the bellows and increase the nozzle opening 7, the valve plate'40 is rocked in a clockwise direction as shown in Fig. 5, by the operator angularly displacing the wand elbow 10 about its axis until a tongue 47 thereof engages a valve shoulder 46 to displace the port 42 and put a suction port 41 in register with the body ports 37, 36. Either of the valve positions is maintained by a spring 50 engaging a body recess 51, thus allowing full angular displacement of the elbow 10 and the wand secured thereto. An upwardly spring-biassed brush 61 is held in its operative position by a wedge 65 linked by a pin and slot connection to a bellows plate 30, a portion 53 of which forms the front lip of the nozzle opening 7, and is withdrawn on retraction of the bellows.
