Abstract

650,502. Artificial hands; STEEPER, Ltd., H., and PHILPOTT, W. J. June 4, 1948, No. 15126., [Class 81 (ii)] An artificial hand has a thumb pivotally mounted for opening and closing movement wherein the thumb is also mounted for traversing movement about a pivotal axis, normal to the longitudinal axis of the thumb, the arrangement being such that the thumb may be locked against traversing movement, yet remain free for the opening and closing movement. As shown in Fig. 1, the thumb 44 is pivotally mounted at 45 for sideways movement on a hemispherical bar 46 which is in turn pivotally mounted at 9 on the body portion (not shown) of the hand. the two pivots being at right angles to each other. A spring-pressed plunger 50 engages one of three apertures 51, 52, 53, Fig. 3, formed in hemisphere 46, the plunger being lifted clear of the apertures by a plate 57 operated through links 63, 59, by a pin 28 on the hand-closing, mechanism, the pin 28 actuating lever 59 when it contacts a projection 61 on the lever.
