Abstract

645,063. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO. Aug. 6, 1947, No. 21401. Convention date, March 4, 1940. [Class 74 (ii)] In an independent-needle circular machine there are provided means whereby elastic and non-elastic yarns are fed at separate feeding points, spaced needles only take and draw the elastic yarn into independent knitted stitches and needles are raised to a yarn-taking but not to a latch-clearing position prior to taking the non-elastic yarn, and pattern-controlled supplemental means movable to and from active position for raising spaced needles only to clear at the non-elastic yarn feed, whereby some needles knit and others tuck. In utilizing a wrap machine to form a tuck edge on a fabric such as a stocking top, spaced jacks, selected by action of the top one of plungers 28 or 129 (normally used to select jacks, and thus their needles, for wrapping) on long butts 24 or the topmost of frangible butts 126, are raised by the action of wrap cam 29 on master butts 26 or of wrap cam 131, supplemented by a patterncontrolled cam 133, on master butts 125, so that their needles clear and take, at the auxiliary feed, an elastic yarn e or e<SP>1</SP>, which is drawn into loops by pattern-controlled stitch- and centre sinker-cams 39 and 66 or 111 and 204; subsequently, these selected jacks are raised by a pattern-controlled cam or cams 40 or 155, 156, 151, so that the needles again clear and take non-elastic yarn y or y<SP>1</SP>, whilst the remaining needles are raised to a tucking level by cam parts 19 and 18 or by cam 215. The front stitch cam 11 or 104, Figs. 14 and 39 (not shown) is moved out of action during the above operations. In the form of Fig. 38, a second set of plungers 130 makes possible " colour side of colour " and " colour within colour." Specifications 20101/09, [Class 74], 300,605, [Class 74 (ii)], 528,673 and U.S.A. Specification 2,208,698 are referred to.
