Abstract

643,645. Knitting - machines. MELLOR, BROMLEY, & CO., Ltd., and SHORTLAND, A. Aug. 3, 1945, No. 19965. [Class 74 (ii)] To plate over part of the width of the fabric, in a straight-bar machine, the main and plating carriers, which are located at different levels measured in the direction of the length of the needle stems to provide the plating angle between the yarns, are traversed together without a lead of either one or the other, for the distance necessary for the plating, and the main carrier is traversed beyond the plating carrier to produce the unplated fabric. The plating carrier 4 is raised, Fig. 2, or the main carrier 3 is lowered, Fig. 3 (or both are moved) at the beginning of, or during the first part of its traverse or of the draw, and is restored to its normal level at the end thereof. When the part to be plated is so narrow that the plating carrier has completed its traverse before the slurcock arrives at the first jack sinker to engage the plating thread, the raised plating carrier may be lowered gradually, as the slurcock advances, to maintain the plating angle substantially constant. In the arrangement of Fig. 7, the plating carrier rolls 6a, 6b are raised and lowered, in timed relation with the movements of the slurcock, by rock-shafts 14, 15, 16, slidingly keyed to mechanisms such as 12a, 12b carried by the selvedge and splicing stops and comprising trucks such as 20a, 20b, co-operating with cams, such as 22, 23, on the tie-bar 11, the trucks being shifted from one cam path to another at the appropriate times by other cams such as 26, 27a, 27b. Movement of the main carrier or carriers may be similarly effected or (since it is necessary only that these carriers should be raised before the dividing sinkers are advanced and lowered after their withdrawal) they may be raised, against the action of a lowering spring 34, Fig. 13, by a cam 31 travelling with the tie-bar 11 and acting through bell-crank 32 and lever 33. The draw mechanism may be as described in Specification 643,644.
