Abstract

480,686. Knitting-machines. MILLER, M. C. Aug. 21, 1936, No. 23082. Convention date, Jan. 15. [Class 74 (ii)] A straight-bar knitting-machine is provided with knock-over elements 47 each having a knock-over surface 102 ending in a throat 104 by which a sinker loop of a previously knitted course is engaged to bring the needle loops of that course to the back of the adjacent needles prior to the raising of the needles. Each section of knock-over elements 47 is supported upon a bar 108 pivotally mounted on a lever arm 110 and pressed upwards by a compression spring 114. The upward movement of the bar 108 and elements 47 is limited by a stop screw 118 engaging a lug 116 on the bar. The arm 110 is loosely mounted upon a rock-shaft 112 extending the length of the machine. To impart movement to the arm 110 and to the bar 108, a lever 122 is rigidly secured to the shaft 112 and is connected to the arm 110 by a tension spring 124. A stop screw 130 on the lever 122 engages an abutment 132 on the arm 110. One or more cam levers 134 are also secured upon the shaft 112 and carry rolls 136 which engage alternatively cams 138, 140 on a cam shaft 44. The cam 138 is engaged by the roll 136 during ordinary knitting; upon axial movement of the shaft 112, the roll engages the cam 140 during fashioning operations. The provision of such hooked or throated bits 47 allows the usual rapid outward and return movements of the needles to be dispensed with, and as shown by the chain-dotted lines in Fig. 26, only enough horizontal movement of the needles to cause the needle beards to clear the press edge 49 and to draw the newly formed kinks off the noses of the sinkers 46 is required. Further, during narrowing, the throats of the knock-over elements 47 hold the loops and ensure that those loops not transferred by the points 56, Fig. 23, will be held to the rear of the needles 48 as the needles rise. While the loops to be transferred are being shed from their needles, and the needles are moving to their lowest position, the loops are drawn over the surfaces 102 of the element 47, and since the elements can move downwards against the spring 114, the loops are accurately repositioned if they have become distorted. A table or carrier 150, Fig. 4, is pivotally mounted so as to extend close to the knock-over bits 47 to support the knitted fabric as it is taken up from the needles.
